Rises The Night RIP II Challenge Book Review

Rises the Night
By Colleeen Gealson
RIP Challenge book number 3
From Publishers WeeklyIn Gleason's latest, she returns to the budding career of Venator Victoria Gardella, a Buffyesque vampire hunter living in an Austen-style Regency world. Having spent the last year mourning the death of her husband, slain at the hands of the vampire queen, Lilith, Victoria is desperate for revenge. Before long, she stumbles on a vampiric plot to seize Akvan's Obelisk, a powerful artifact that will grant its controller the power to command legions of the dead. In order to foil the plan, Victoria crisscrosses Europe, teaming up with a handsome stranger along the way. A fast-paced carnival ride of a book, the sophomore series entry (after The Rest Falls Away) hits the ground running without any introduction to Gleason's world; for those new to the series, this volume will probably prove confusing. Those who've read the first title, however, won't be disappointed: Victoria is a more determined, fleshed-out character, having grown wiser, sadder and more ambiguous about the morality of her mission. Her world, too, expands significantly in this adventure. A tense plot line and refreshingly diverse supporting characters complete the package, giving series fans plenty to sink their teeth into—and plenty more to look forward to.Book DescriptionIn Italy, a powerful vampire is amassing the power to control the souls of the dead. Lady Victoria Gardella de Lacy-a vampire slayer for just over a year-races across Europe to stop what could be the most deadly army the Gardellas have ever faced. She is accompanied by Sebastian Vioget, a man as tempting as he is untrustworthy. But when Victoria discovers that she has been betrayed by one of her most trusted allies, the truth will challenge all her powers as a Venator-and as a woman.
My Review:
In the second novel by Colleen Gleason, the reader will have so much more to look forward to. You have the history of Victoria and her family. She has already established the Venator powers, now it is time to kick some vampire butt! When I picked this book up, I did not set it down until I finished it. Colleen’s writing skills improved immensely, I loved the fact that you learn even more history of the Gardellas and Venators. Victoria’s character is so witting and charming yet, controlled and all business.
The book starts one year after her mourning of the ending fight in the first book. Max left for Italy shortly after the fight in book one. Queen Lilith has been banished to the mountains not to bee seen for sometime. However, her son is on the brink of controlling the world. Victoria must go to Italy to help stop Lilith’s son from rising to power. In this book, both humans and vampires work together to stop the forces that are brewing. Victoria learns even more about herself and her Venator abilities and history. There are many surprise elements within the book that will make you both happy and sad. I can not wait for the third book to arrive!

I can't wait for the third book either! Wasn't this one great?! I totally agree that she grew so much as a writer between the first and second books...can't wait to see what she has in store for us in the third!

I just finished this one, and I found it much more compelling than the first one (as you say, in so many words). I agree that it would be confusing if one hadn't read the first one. Now, I'm eagerly anticipating The Bleeding Dusk's publication, aren't you?
